Chapter 8

This chapter discussed the difficulties in teaching a student who doesn't know English. It talks about the importance of getting to know them and getting to know their culture. This allows us to better understand them and allows them to better understand that we care and that we are there to help them. Health could be hard to teach someone from a different culture because there are so many moral values that come into play with health. Personally I feel that these kids need to be taught enough English to understand their teachers before even thinking about entering public schools.

You are so right about the complications and difficulties involved in teaching health to a second language learner from a different culture! Though I guess you run into that even with kids born and raised in America . . . two kids born and raised in the same town but who attended different churches are going to cause you the same difficulties. Your wish about their language acquisition is a nice one, but it's pretty much a dream. And for many kids (more so elementary but it's still true in high school), the best way for them to learn the language is by being in school with the kids who speak it. It's that total immersion thing.
